Town Tidbits
Citrus County Historic Courthouse
located in Downtown Inverness
In 1891, a battle raged between Mannfield (now known as Lecanto) and Inverness (formerly
Tompkinsville) over the county seat. A vote was held to move the county seat to Inverness. During a midnight raid, Inverness residents loaded up all the county records, furniture and fixtures onto their wagons, along with the County Clerk sitting behind his desk who refused to budge from his office, and took them to Inverness.
The first Census of Citrus County was taken in 1890 and the population was only 2,394. Today the population is around 110,000.
The Old courthouse is one of only 25 remaining historic courthouses in Florida.
In 1961, the Elvis Presley movie, Follow That Dream, filmed the courtroom scene in the upstairs of the old courthouse.
